Veterans Day Parade: A 30 Year Ponca City Tradition

Veterans Day Parade: A 30 Year Ponca City Tradition

For three decades, the first Saturday in November has belonged to the men and women who served. On Saturday, Nov. 7, downtown Ponca City will once again fill with flags, music and grateful neighbors for the 30th Annual Ponca City Veterans Day Parade, one of the largest Veterans Day parades in Oklahoma.

What began 30 years ago as a community effort to say thank you has grown into one of the most anticipated mornings on the Ponca City calendar. Families stake out their spots along Grand Avenue early. Children wave small flags as servicemen and women pass by. And for many veterans, the cheers from the curb are a long-overdue welcome home.

A Morning on Grand

The parade steps off at 10:45 a.m. and travels down Grand Avenue through the heart of downtown, past the historic storefronts that frame this month's cover. The route has traditionally started at First Street and continued east through Sixth Street before ending at War Memorial Park on North Seventh Street.

Spectators can expect veterans and active-duty military, patriotic floats, marching bands, bagpipers, cheer and drill teams, and vintage military vehicles. Overhead, aircraft flyovers have become a crowd favorite. Few sights capture the spirit of the day better than a giant American flag carried down Grand, held at the edges by dozens of young hands.

The Celebration of Freedom

When the last entry passes, the celebration moves to War Memorial Park for the annual Celebration of Freedom. It's a fitting place for it, because the park is home to Ponca City's POW/MIA memorial. This year's festivities include free hot dogs and drinks, plus a bounce house, petting zoo and face painting for kids. Visitors can also expect military displays, tanks, vintage equipment, warbirds, live music and historical reenactors, all bringing different eras of American service to life.

Admission to the parade and the celebration is free, and all ages are welcome.

A Community That Remembers

Ponca City's connection to military service runs deep. During World War II, the Darr School of Aeronautics trained pilots here, including British Royal Air Force cadets. Eight of them who died during training rest in Ponca City's Odd Fellows Cemetery, where the British flag still flies over their graves. Continental Oil Company's refinery produced high-octane aviation fuel for Allied aircraft. And names of Kay County veterans are honored at Veterans Plaza downtown.

The Veterans Day Parade carries that legacy forward. It's organized by volunteers and supported by local businesses, schools and civic groups. Each year it reminds a new generation that freedom has a cost, and that the people who paid it live right here among us.

Join the Celebration

Bring a lawn chair, bring the kids and bring a flag. Arrive early for a good view along Grand Avenue, then head to War Memorial Park afterward to visit with veterans and enjoy the festivities.

To every veteran and service member: thank you. Ponca City is proud to line the street for you, for the 30th year and for many more to come.
