Shanky’s Christmas Cookie

Shanky’s Christmas Cookie

The perk of being a bar owner (besides getting to hang out with all you wonderful people) is being introduced to a plethora of wonderful new spirits to taste test. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Recently, a distributor brought me Shanky’s Whip, and I was impressed. Vanilla, caramel and Irish whiskey. It’s smooth, delicious and gives off serious cozy sweater, chilly night, fall vibes. Basically, a hug in a glass, but with booze.

So, who the heck was Shanky? Well, apparently, he was an Irish jockey who got thrown from his horse mid-race. Most people might call it a day. Not Shanky. This man came back to the racetrack with an ostrich, a cart and a whip to finish the race. I don’t know what was in his whiskey, but I need a glass of that to get me through laundry day.

A staunch whiskey drinker, Shanky loved his whiskey but wasn’t a fan of the burn. Being the resourceful, creative thinker, he was, he had a lightbulb moment. He took inspiration from his beloved stout, with its rich, dark color and creamy texture and combined it with whiskey to create Shanky’s Whip Irish Whiskey Liqueur.

Shanky’s Whip is an Irish whiskey liqueur that’s doing things a little differently. Distilled in Ireland, it’s black, silky smooth and has the look and texture of a stout. It’s not your typical pale, fiery whiskey. It’s made from whey instead of traditional unmalted barley, and unlike those centuries-old whiskey recipes, Shanky’s is a relatively new addition to the spirits world.

At 33% ABV, Shanky’s Whip brings plenty of flavor without overpowering the experience. You can enjoy it straight, over ice or use it to build something a little more exciting. Personally, I think it shines in dessert cocktails, where that vanilla and caramel goodness gets to do its thing.

And just in time for the holidays, we’re putting Shanky’s Whip to work in a Sugar Cookie Martini. We’re combining it with white rum, orgeat almond liqueur and cream to create that sweet, creamy cookie flavor we all love this time of year. So, if you’re looking for a little liquid dessert without having to bake a thing, this one’s for you!

Recipe

  • 11/2 ounces Shanky’s Whip Black Irish Whiskey Liqueur

  • 1-ounce White Rum

  • 1-ounce Heavy Cream

  • 1/4-ounce Orgeat

Combine all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini or coupe glass and enjoy!
